Systematic Reviews - The Review Process from  the Joanna Briggs Institute - Accessed on-line December 7, 2005

This article describes the review process for the Joanna Briggs Institution (JBI), who “regard the results of well designed research studies grounded in any methodological position as providing more vigorous evidence than anecdotes or personal opinion” and believe “the approach to evaluating evidence will be tailored to the specific focus of the review”.

The Evidence Based Healthcare Movement: Overview and Development from the Joanne Briggs Institute -  Accessed on-line December 7, 2005

Beginning with Sackett and the Cochrane Collaboration, the author describes the development of evidence-based practice in medicine, nursing and allied health. Although RCTs and meta-analysis have been emphasized in the past, qualitative research is a key tool for evidence-based health care, which is defined here by the following statement: "Evidence based health care takes place when decisions that affect the health of individuals, families and communities are taken with due weight accorded to all valid, relevant information."

OHA Hospital Report – the OHA Scorecard process is important in Ontario, and continues to evolve. Pathways and related tools are under “Standardized Protocols”  in the most recent acute care review.

From the OHA 2002 Report Card - Full Report :  Development and Use of Standardized Protocols

“Standardized clinical protocols aim to improve patient outcomes and achieve efficiencies. Examples of standardized protocols include pre-printed orders, clinical practice guidelines, and care pathways. These “action plans” are typically developed by a multidisciplinary group of health professionals using the most current medical evidence. They identify and outline comprehensive plans and procedures for patients with specific health conditions. Standardized clinical protocols can lead to better identification of patient needs and better coordination of activities among members of the care team.”

The Care Management Network

The Care Management Network was developed and originally supported by the hospital in Orangeville, now Headwaters Health. As part of their project in case management funded by the Innovations Fund of the Ministry of Health of Ontario, they shared their findings through the network. In the mid 1990s, the responsibility for network meetings and maintenance began to pass among organizations hosting meetings.

Meetings of the Care Management Network are posted on the Evidence-Based Care Web Forum.

Evidence-Based Care Web Forum

This forum is hosted by the Grey Bruce Health Network. The server and software now used for the forum was donated by the Care Management Network from funds raised over the years through biannual network meetings, added to original seed funds from a seminar delivered by founding members of the network in the early 1990s.

This forum provides a spot for questions and postings about paths and related evidence based care management tools. People post tools, and share strategies. The forum was developed and is supported by the Grey Bruce Health Network.

Following is the original introduction from Jessica Meleskie, Evidence-Based Care Program Coordinator, Grey Bruce Health Network, the administrator of the forum.

This forum provides an opportunity for people associated with evidence-based care tool development and implementation in health care organizations to share ideas, tools, and general discussions. As this is a public forum, please be advised that anyone can access this information once they register, and so will be able to download any attachments you include in your posts

Feel free to post about any evidence-based tools, pathways included, on this forum.

Caremapsforseniors.ca

“Caremapsforseniors.ca provides health professionals with references to published caremaps in important areas of seniors care. It was developed by a Specialized Geriatric Services team funded by a Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Science Center Innovation Award. The sites development was also supported and is maintained by the Community Education in Aging and Health Project of the Regional Geriatric Program of Toronto.”  This site presents or links to a large number of very good references and information sources.
